I had a working tv until lighting hit line 2 miles away and set was plugged in but not turned on, heard a snapping sound. At first it turned on but vertical height was short on top and bottom about 1/4", next day turned on again only had about 1/2 of vertical height. Now set will try to start but shuts down after 2 seconds. I tested over the top of some of the componets but have not removed any yet. Power supply diodes seem good. What I am wondering if a set will not start up how far do you need to look for problem as it has #LA7837 13 pin Vertical IC chip which I would never be able to test and remember the set did work a short while after liughting strike so can't be to serious like windings or flyback. I had a different set hit by lightning thru power line when set was on and there was about 7 diodes and lots of caps shorted but this set does not seem that bad.

Any suggestions?

Thanks John

I'd replace that vertical IC you mentioned and check (or just replace) all the electrolytic capacitors around it.

edit--
Actually I would first re-wet (re-solder) all the legs of that vertical IC, and the capacitors around it.
