I actually have two TVs with this problem, but since the sears is the one currently taken apart, i'll just use it's vitals and get to the other one later.

model # 564-42936950
picture sometimes works, but often goes to a vertical line in the center of the screen. hitting helps sometimes. I've looked around here a bit and it looks like this is probably the vertical IC, but I don't know how to identify this part on the circuit board.

I assume you mean a "horizontal" line across the center of the CRT. NO vertical deflection.

Follow the green / yellow wires from the yoke to the main board, then follow the foil circuit traces to the IC. IC should be on a heat sink in the vicinity of the yoke plug. SAMS has no listing for the schematic for this model. Google number you find on each suspect part to identify function.
Probably bad solder joint(s).
