|
|
Make and model: RCA 20F420T 20" CRT TV
Manufactured by: TTE Technology
Purchased: about 2 years ago for $108 Walmart $145 with tax and recycle fees
Appears to be a reconditioned unit as I now notice wear on areas where there should be little or none.
Worked fine for the last 2 years. FActory build date is June 2007
Trouble started when I turned it on one morning -- it worked fine for about 20 seconds and then turned itself off. I could not turn it back on. The red power light would go out for about one second and then come back on.
After doing a reset by unplugging it for more than 5 minutes, I tried again with the same results.
I then took the cover off and looked for overheated or poorly soldered components. Nothing real obvious although one resistor looks like it is running a bit hot as it has discolered the circuit board more than normal.
With the cover off, I was able to get a very bright picture with vertical retrace lines on it. The TV would turn itself off every 15 minutes or so. If I activated the menu, it would turn itself off almost immediately (2 or 3 seconds).
After many tries I was able to very quickly activate the menu, move to the picture menu and turn the brightness down from 50 to 00.
The TV nows stays on when I activate the menu but is still way to bright with vertical retrace lines. It also turns itself off after 30 minutes or so. Putting a fan near the circuit board to try to cool off any overheated components did not noticeably change anything.
Is this tube type TV worth fixing in a repair shop?
I cannot find any circuit diagrams on the net nor any manuals which I can download for free. I do have an electrical engineering background, so I am comfortable around electronic devices and I have but kit TVs together so soldering is not a problem...
Should I continue with trying to fix it or just buy a new LCD television?
Thanks for any advice you can give...

something is overdriving your screen voltage. It could be a short in the neck of your CRT, but I assume it is one of the transistors that is driving the voltage level to the CRT. I know that is vague, but thats about as helpful as I can be.
If you can fix it yourself, it might be cost effective. If you have to take it to the shop, it will likely be cost prohibitive. |

there I fixed the link for you.
I've never had to screen for job listings in the spam filter before. Must really be a rough economy. |

Maybe a "Jobs" subforum
Don't forget about the EEPROM. You can get some real interesting symptoms if its been corrupted. |
