Eric,
My 2 cents from many previous repairs, including my own equipment.
I am located in a rural area on top of a hill, so see this almost yearly on my own stuff.
For lightning/power surge problems, if a quick PS fix and/or HO repair doesn't get the unit going,
there is usually severe damage to other parts. Parts have been voltage stressed
and could fail at any time if you do get it working. It could turn out to be a real dog,
chasing one part after another. It is best to let the customer know it is uneconomical to repair.
You will be doing yourself and customer a big favor. Homeowners insurance will cover the cost
of your estimate and the customer gets a new tv! (If he has replacement insurance).
Also, have the customer check everything else in the house. If any of the breakers in the house
were tripped, any surge devices are probably bad.
Surge protector strips should all be replaced, as the MOV's inside are usually
blown to bits, but the strip still works ( without any surge protection, of course). |
