1. Make & Model Number: Sony KDL-46V5100

2. Current symptoms: Thanks for this forum. I have a Sony Bravia 46" LCD model KDL-46V5100 TV with dead HDMI ports. Purchased August 2009. Nothing works in the HDMI ports. I plugged an Apple TV directly into all of the ports, and the TV wouldn't recognize it. Same Apple TV works fine on my Vizio 32" HDMI ports. I also run my HDMI surround system into Port 1, and the weird thing is that will carry the audio but not the video. I updated to the latest firmware, did a factory reset, and unplugged the unit for a while (some of the stuff suggested on other forums); none of those fixes worked. Only ports 1 and 3 light up, and the other ones won't show up in the input menu regardless of what's plugged in. Nevertheless, no HDMI device works in any of the ports.

3. Location: Horicon, WI (Dodge County)

4. Any other details that may be helpful: I discovered the problem the day after some company was fiddling with the power lines outside and caused a 1-hour outage in my house. None of the equipment was on at the time the power outage occurred. In fact, I'd never had problems with the TV prior to the day the power company was fiddling with the lines outside. I'd been using the HDMI features regularly for about two years and more recently added the surround system to the mix, never with any problems. Nothing regarding equipment or settings was changed from the time it worked to the time it didn't; the only thing different was the power outage. The power came back on, but it wasn't until the next day that I put in a movie and discovered that I could hear it but not see it. I'm experienced with technology so I went through every troubleshooting step I could think of, but I don't fiddle with the internal components of TVs. I have almost 100% certainty that the HDMI ports on the TV are dead, and that the cause doesn't lie with any other equipment, as everything else works fine.

I know a Sony factory authorized shop that will charge $35 to look at it. Not that the fee is a big deal, but it would be really nice to have an idea of the repair cost ahead of time to help with my decision to go through the trouble or just get a new TV, and whether or not to file an insurance claim, since my deductible is $1,000. Thanks for the help.

A power cycle fixed this. I simply unplugged the TV for a few hours and did the factory reset, and it worked. But now a year later it's displaying horizontal lines.
