Sony Trinitron 27"
Model KV-27TS27
Hi! I'm new here. I made what I think you guys would call a "large item pickup." Got a TV from the garbage. Lately, every single large TV I have found in the garbage has had a busted tube. I assume that's because people don't want to risk getting a hernia putting them down. But one person was kind enough not to drop it, and so I've got a new TV.
My TV has a similar problem to the one listed here:
http://www.riddledtv.com/repair/sony.html
the KV-27TS35 one. My TV has almost no audio most of the time, but if you pump up the volume you can barely hear the TV show, plus a sort of background noise that I think is normal for when the volume is up 100%. Occasionally the sound comes back, but it's distorted and sometimes there's a whining noise too. When I go to the menu and put the audio on SAP (I still don't know what that is) the audio comes back on clear -but- there's a very loud whining noise that starts quiet and spins up rapidly, sounds like a 747 taking off. The audio option was on mono before I changed it, perhaps when the TV started having this problem, putting it on mono helped? I looked all over the chassis and boards for blown fuses, loose plugs, cracked solder, or bulging capacitors, but I got nothing. With the TV on, wiggling one board a little bit changed the whine (not the SAP whine), making it louder or quieter. I unplugged and reseated all the boards with no luck. That tips page on this site says to have the tuner rebuilt and to replace some other part of which I have no idea what that is (what is it?). Oh and one other thing, I figured if the tuner was bad, I would be able to hear sound from an a/v input like a dvd player. But when you push the tv/video button it says "VIDEO" but it keeps showing the channel it was on in tv mode, and you can't change channels. Even with a dvd player running and plugged in, that same thing happened. Now I'm an amateur at best, but I can learn hands-on stuff real fast. And I'm not too bad with a soldering gun/iron (my dad taught me how to solder when I was 7). Thanks a lot in advance! |

| Remove SBX1637 from set and replace with 2 caps( 4.7 uf,50 volts) put + of each capacitor on pin 12, and the negative leads on pin 10 and 11 |

| So you're telling me the tuner is fine? And I assume that SBX1637 is labelled on the actual board and the pins are numbered on the board? |

The part your looking for looks like this:
www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog_name=MCMProducts&product_id=32-9495
You could just replace it with a new one... or you can use the cap trick mentioned above if you dont want SAP ever... that is usually the spanish alternate audio... I cant remember what the letters stand for right now. |

I don't care about SAP, but I do care about stereo...and quality. I don't demand perfect sound quality, but right better be right and left better be left and the sound better be clean. Will the cap trick do that for me? And is my tuner ok?
Ooh and I just looked at radioshack.com and they have a non polarized cap to the specs 4.7 uf 50 volts. I assume non polarized means + and - are interchangeable, can I use that for this trick? They don't have a polar one on the website but maybe in the store, who knows? Radioshack sucks but they're convenient, like a 7-11. |

| I need some help... I can't find anything labelled SBX1637. Is it a chip, or that (tiny) sound board, or a capacitor? And the only "pins" that seem to be numbered are the ones for chips and that sound board. I can't find anything with SBX in it, everything's like JW504, C381, M589, etc. Could you please give me an area to look around, and tell me what SBX1637 is? Thanks! |
