Hi,

Please help. I was trying to watch my 12 year old Toshiba Model # CN32E90 television the other day but when it turned on, I saw a thin horizontal colored line in the middle of a black screen. Of course, when I try to unplug it and replug it in, the same thing happens. Of course, the TV sound works great. I have read online that it is caused by faulty vertical deflection. :?: So I took the tv apart and of course nothing seems out of the ordinary. I vacuumed the internal circuits, and tried it again with the same problem. I have some electronics know how and have troubleshooted electronic systems before. Also I have a voltmeter and a voltage detector.

Please provide assistance. I could submit photos of internal components on the photobucket website if you like. :) Any help would be appreciated.

My Chassis number is: TAC 9520
My main board is: PB5413-1
My neck board is: PB5421-2

If you take pictures of the top side of the board, I can show you where the vertical chip is that you need to resolder. If resoldering it doesn't work. You'll have to replace it.

Hi,

Did you mean the main board or the neck board? Here are links to the images.

Let me know if I need to take more pictures. Thanks!

No, not the neck board. Sorry, I should have been mores specific. It's the main circuit board. If you can get it from the 3 different angles, It ought to cover just about everything

Hi,

Here are pictures of the main board. I hope the angles show the stuff you want. :) I plan on removing the entire main board. That's the only way I will be able to solder anyway.

in that last picture, it's the chip with the large heatsink, behind the big silver tuner there.

turn the board over and resolder all the pins on that chip.

let me know if you need me to explain how to do that any better.

Hi,

I found an online guide to my TV here:
http://www.tacpservice.toshiba.com/TACP/training/TV/ctv05f.pdf

It details the circuit board and schematics. The circuit board has the word 'VERT' where the vertical circuit is location. It is close to the flyback transformer. On page 127 of the PDF above, it mentions the troubleshooting steps for: No vertical scanning with one horizontal line. So visually, I looked at the bottom of the board and noticed that one pin seems like it has a large bubble where it was soldered with some brown color around it: R305. I think that this could be the issue. Maybe I need to get a new resistor for this part.

I will get pictures and post them. If you have any suggestions on soldering or links on proper testing of circuits, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I tried soldering last night (following your advice), not the Toshiba product repair steps. I soldered all 8 pins of the vertical chip that was attached to the heat sink. It was as simple as frequently tinning the tip of the soldering iron and also keeping a very steady hand. I touched each of the soldering points on the bottom of the board with a fine tip of the soldering gun for less than a second. All the soldering occurred with all wires connected (not the power cord, of course!) After all this, I waited a minute for the soldering to cool and put everything back together. I pushed the power button and guess what happened, a full screen picture. The TV is FIXED! Thanks for all your help. This was a challenge for me.

You are not going to believe this, but...

The TV is back to the old issue. The picture has but one horizontal line in the center. Now I am confused. I guess I'll have to take this TV apart again. Do you think it could be that vertical chip again? It is hard to tell. Do you have any suggestions?
