I have a zenith projection tv I bought it used for $25.00 and I new it
would not power up well I got it home and found that the stand by power
supply was not giving an output I worked on it for a few days and found
that several of the protectors (soldered fuses) were bad I replaced them
and had my output on my power supply hooked it all back up turned the
set on and nothing. Took it back apart and started checking the
deflection circuit found another bad protector replaced it checked out
the rest of the board and put it back together powered it up. Know I
have sound but no picture I have checked out the other boards and have
not found any problems with them I bought the TV to fix as a hobby and I
have got this far I don't wont to give up now |

It give you general flow chart of common problem.
Follow the trouble shooting guide.
Every old model TVs do have general checking method.
It would vary a little bit according differnt model.
First check all the large output transistor, and high
power IC.
find out the shutdown circuitry. This would vary very
differnt for every model. Study this, so that find out
where the the find activation of the shud down action,
to trace up the problem source.
After study that model, then you would be familiar
that model the component installing location, Mark
down check points use marker pen. Some service manual
would give you protection theory, this is the main
point of repair skill.
Experience will build up on hard working, not build
up on guessing or asking. It need to know the circuit
structure and it's component location. Fix one problem
will input the repair data into human brain storage.
There would be no any short way. new chassis, every TV
guy would be as same as any non TV knowledge person
when both of them look at the new circuit board.
The different is that TV guy is the person who had
been working on it's domain for a very long time then
can look at it and know which, and where is the
problem component.
My first TV repair job. I had worked on it over one
month and looked at each component. That time I don't
have service manual. I had to write down the practical
circuit with my own hand and copy it down from the TV
chassis. one trace, one component on the paper. After
the whole circuit was appear on the paper, and all
component have been tested for it's value and the
traces were tested and measured it's continuity. Many
time can find out problem component and did not know
why it was burnt out, so that have to look at circuit
theory to study the reason. These knowledge is for the
next repair job. at the same time build up knowledge
of language, and also oneself temper control. Finally
a small vocation training student become a man who
have deep interesting on electronics.
We are TV guys not only want to fix TVs but also
have related interseting on this domain. many other
job would have much bigger income than TV repair job. |
